Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a medical evaluation important before choosing vein treatments?
Multiple spider veins or varicose veins may signal underlying venous abnormalities. For long-term, pleasing results, underlying venous disease should be diagnosed with an ultrasound examination and treated. This allows the surgeon to "map" the disease, and treat the underlying cause, not just the outward manifestations.
I only have spider veins. Why do I need a full evaluation?
Spider veins are often the outward expression of deeper underlying vein disease. If one were to treat only the spider veins, they will most quickly return because the cause has not been addressed. Uncovering and treating an underlying venous problem will not only result in longer lasting results but will increase the chance that at least part of your treatment will be covered by insurance companies.
Does medical insurance cover vein treatments?
Insurance companies and medicare cover most but not all medically necessary procedures (usually larger varicose veins) but not cosmetic procedures (spider veins). In some cases, insurance programs will cover certain cosmetic procedures. The initial evaluation by the physician and the findings on ultrasound will be essential to give you the best chance of getting your treatment approved by the insurance company.
What is Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation?
Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that has rendered vein stripping all but obsolete. The procedure consists of placing a catheter into the diseased vein through a needle puncture with virtually no scarring. Radiofrequency energy (heat) is then applied that destroys the vein wall from the inside. There is minimal discomfort and patients typically resume their active lifestyles immediately.
What about laser?
There are multiple ways to treat varicose veins through an endovenous (from inside the vein) approach. Radiofrequency ablation differs from laser in that it directly destroys the diseased vein while laser energy heats the blood in the vein and indirectly damages the vessel. Radiofrequency is also the only modality that has been proven in clinical trials to be as effective as surgery.
Will my varicose or spider veins return?
While it is unlikely that the treated vessels will come back, some patients may experience the appearance of new disease veins in the future. A thorough evaluation and mapping are crucial to long lasting results, but there is no guarantee that new vessels will not reappear sometime in the future.
Will I have to wear medical stockings?
Graduated compression stockings are an important part of both cosmetic and medical treatment. They are available in several styles and colors. Your particular evaluation and treatment will determine how long you need to wear them.
How long does treatment take?
Treatment times are brief, and our clinic is easy to access. Most cosmetic procedures require less than one hour in a clinic setting. Surgical procedures require more operative and recovery time but generally can be performed on an outpatient basis. Parking is located next to our offices.
